Chris Wilder says that Mason Holgate “has to take responsibility” for the red card he received in Sheffield United’s 5-0 defeat at home to Brighton.
Holgate, 27, was shown a red card following a challenge on Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma in the 12th minute after he caught the Japan international just below the knee.
Referee Stuart Attwell had initially shown the Everton loanee a yellow card, but following a VAR review, it was upgraded to a red.
Speaking post-match, Sheffield United manager Wilder said: “Well, maybe as a player that played for quite a long time, you would think that’s an OK challenge — a strong and competitive challenge.”But I think we all have to admit, me included, the game has moved on.

“It was a mistimed tackle and the correct decision was made.
“Mason has to take the responsibility that his decision has hurt us and the game plan goes out of the window after that.
“It’s difficult when things like that — which, of course, was self inflicted — go against you.”
Simon Adingra scored twice, while Facundo Buonanotte, Danny Welbeck, and an own goal from Jack Robinson sealed a dominant victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton.
The result sees Brighton move up to seventh in the table, while Sheffield United remain bottom.
